While HostGator doesn't offer a free domain with signup, it will facilitate your purchase of a domain name for as low as $15. While Hatchling plan members do not get any parked domains or add-on domains, Baby and Business plan members do. And while Hatchling and Baby plan members do not get anonymous FTP, Business plan members do.
HostGator is not bad in the way of programming scripts and related services, but there are better. It's pretty solid on scripts (lacking Javascript/DHTML, as many web hosts do). But in the way of related services, it lacks server side includes and custom cron jobs.
Be aware that HostGator is one of the only web hosts (along with JustHost) not to offer password-protected directories (if that matters to you).
HostGator does, however, offer Private SSL and Dedicated IP to people on the Baby plan (at extra cost) and gives them free to people on the Business plan.
